John Bruce Walzel, 84 of Lufkin, Texas, passed away on July 10, 2010 surrounded by his friends and family.

He was born in Houston, Texas on September 8th 1926. John, known as Buck by his friends and family, graduated from Beasley High School. He attended the Houston Police Dept. Academy and he was married to Eve Lucille Farrell on May 3rd 1954.

Buck served in the United States Army during World War II, doing tours in the South Pacific, occupied Japan and Korea. He served as a police officer for the City of Houston Police Dept. for 21 years, working in the Patrol and Detective divisions. He was Head of Building Security for Exxon Corp. for 17 years. Buck was a lifetime member of the Farm and Ranch Club, and a Director for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for many years.

Buck was preceded in death by his father, August Joseph Walzel; mother, Thelma Evelyn Ditto Walzel; sisters, Jacqueline Dee Walzel and Levy Mae Quinton Walzel. He is survived by his wife, Eve; sisters Evelyn Blair Myska, Judith Thelma Simmons, children Mike Walzel, Deryl Hunter, Karen Mermonstein, Sue Olds, and Giles Jones; grandchildren, Jamie, Tiffany, Anthony and Kristi; and great-grandchildren, Kristopher, Samantha, Dakota, A.J. and Chloe Evelyn.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 13th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm and on Wednesday, July 14th until the service. The funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on July 14, 2010 at the Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home in Jasper, Texas with graveside services to follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
