James Walker Corn was the third oldest of eight sons. He was born to John Peter and Sarah Jane Heath Corn in Transylvania County, North Carolina on March 31, 1872. He married Margaret Jane Mullinax on January 9, 1893. They had a total of eight children but four of those either died at child birth or died young. Another one, Emmett died at the age of nineteen from moonshine poisoning when he and other boys got some bad whiskey. The others were Minnie Lee Corn Duvall (Edward), Lillie May Corn Chastain (Joe), and Frances Ada Corn Debord (Herman). He helped his dad on the farm in his younger days. He became a stone and brick mason as so many of the Corn Boys and Gals did. Uncle Walk, Dad, two other brothers helped with the construction on the hydroelectric dam in the French Broad River for the Biltmore's to supply power to the mansion in 1898 and 1899. Uncles Walk, Bill and Toll moved to Georgia in 1908 with Dad and Grandpa and Grandma. They were back in Asheville in the 1920 so they stayed about five to 10 years. Uncle Walk went Akron with Herman Debord and Brother Buell for several years to work at Firestone Tire Company. Aunt Margaret died in 1923 while in Asheville. I suppose that Uncle Walk was there at that time. The worked at Firestone Rubber Company but that may have been after he died. At the beginning of the depression he came back to Blairsville. Not having a place to live he stayed with friends and family. He was staying at Corn Hollow when he met an later married Gertie Bowers. They had one child David James Hamilton Corn.
