The son of Joseph Krems & Catherine Elizabeth Ann (Sanderson) Spangler, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Spring Garden Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the overstated age of eighteen in York August 24, 1863, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg that day as a private with Co. C, 13th Pennsylvania Cavalry (117th Pennsylvania), and honorably discharged with his company July 14, 1865.

He married Anna Mary Josephine Houck ca. 1871 and fathered the children you see linked below. In 1890, he was living in York where he was a member of the fire department and where he died in his home at the reported age of 50-7-21.
