In the 1910 Census it was learned that Sam was a farmer, farming rented land in Civil District 2, Grainger, Tennessee. There was a young man living in the household listed as a servant, although his occupation was a farmer.

April 16 was a sad day for Sam's Maggie. A burial plot was selected for him, and Maggie gathered her family and friends around her, as she buried her beloved Sam, to bid him to "Rest in Peace."

married Nelson Singleton on 3 Mar 1917 in Grainger Co., Tennessee. This marriage produced the following children: Arthur W Singleton 1918 – 1960; Johnny Singleton 1920 – 1996 and Victoria "Vickie" Singleton 1923.
The 1920 census found Maggie and Nelson living on a farm in Civil District 4, Grainger, Tennessee. Three of the Shockley children were still at home, and a baby almost 2 years old, Arthur Singelton.
The 1930 census found Maggie living in her home in Civil District 4, Grainger, Tennessee. She was now divorced and no longer was using the name of Singleton, but now using the name of her first husband. Vickie and Arthur were still at home, but there was no evidence of financial support.
