The funeral for Van O'Neal "Junior" Abernathy Jr., of Elkmont, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Steve Abernathy and Bud White officiating. Burial will be at the Pettusville Cemetery.
Mr. Abernathy died Sunday, April 18, 2010, at home. He was born April 19, 1932, in Athens, Alabama, to Van O'Neal Abernathy Sr. and Lerlean Browning Abernathy.
Mr. Abernathy worked as a painter for a maintenance contractor before retiring. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was of the Baptist faith.
Mr. Abernathy was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Justine Wray Abernathy.
Survivors include his daughters, Kimberly Abernathy Pettie and husband Phillip, and Kellie Abernathy, all of Athens; brothers, Billy Abernathy and wife Shirley, Willard Abernathy and wife Jeanette, all of Athens, and Kenneth Abernathy and wife Ann of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Chris Bolton, Chad Barton and Matt Pettie; great-grandchildren, Destyne Bolton and Madison Barton; and several nieces and nephews.
