In 1895, at the age of 16, Carrie married Frank Grow Smith, 24, of Pine River, Gratiot, Michigan. They had 3 boys, Shirley 'Bud', Roy and Kenneth. Frank contracted meningitis in 1902 and passed away at the age of 31.
Sometime between 1902 and 1905, Carrie married Lee Bert Cooley. They moved to Washington State and Bert followed the sawmill jobs while Carrie operated hotels. Carrie and Bert had 3 children, Theodore, Cleo and Lloyd. By 1918 the family settled in the Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle.
Carrie lost her only daughter, Cleo, in 1925.
In 1926, tragedy hit the family, when her daughter-in-law contracted smallpox. Within weeks, she also lost her son, Kenneth, her husband and 1 half-sister. Her house was quarantined by the Health Department for the next year while she cared for her son, Lloyd and grandson, Kenneth.
Carrie later operated the College Cafe near Seattle Pacific College as well as a grocery also located on the hill.
She was a member of First Free Methodist Church for 40 years.
