Madge Danner Mayo

Madge Danner Mayo, aged 91, of Lake Charles, Louisiana, died on March 11, 2010. She was born in Max Meadows, Virginia in 1918.

Her parents were Dallas and Mary Hudson.

Madge's elementary and high school education was in Saltville, Virginia where her father worked for Olin Matheson. He was transferred to Lake Charles when Olin opened a plant in Lake Charles. Madge finished her last year of high school at Lake Charles High.

Madge has been a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, first in Saltville and then in Lake Charles. She and her husband were instrumental in organizing the Moss Bluff United Methodist Church. The church actually met in the Mayo home each Sunday for two years.

Upon her marriage in 1937, she became a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service (United Methodist Women) at the First Methodist Church in Lake Charles. She participated in every phase of the Women's Society, including Circle Leader for over 30 years, member of the society board, study groups and prayer groups. Madge Mayo has always had an interest in plants and gardening; has been a member of a Garden Club since 1950. In 1971, she joined the Southwest Louisiana Rose Society and served that club in every capacity; was the club's first woman president from 1981-1983. Madge was appointed ARS Consulting Rosarian in 1979; was awarded the Gulf District Outstanding Consulting Rosarian Award in 2001; became an Apprentice ARS Horticulture Judge in 1978; became an ARS Arrangements Judge in 1978.

Madge has been an ARS Patron since 1986; traveled to 15 American Rose Society Conventions and 2 International Conventions and participated in Sean McCann's Trip to Ireland in 1987, where she judged at the International Trials in Dublin that year.

Madge received the local society's highest honor, the Bronze Medal in 1994 and the Gulf District's Silver Medal Award in 1988; received a Presidential Citation from ARS President Tommy Cairns during the New Orleans Convention and Show in 2003 and was also recognized that same year in the Circle of Roses of the National Council of Garden Clubs.

Madge was preceded in death by her husband, Claudius A. Mayo, two brothers, Truman and James Ralph Hudson, two sisters, Winnie Gregory and Catherine Ramsay.

She is survived by siblings Thomas Wayne Hudson and Anita Hudson Hogue, her son Bradford Hudson Mayo and his wife Ann L Mayo, her two daughters Claudia Judith Mayo and Virginia Susan Mayo. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Thaddeus, Zachary and Joshua Mayo, Stephanie Starkovich, and Mariah Fine. She also is survived by 7 great-grandchildren, Chandler, Cooper, Claudia, Olivia, Belle, Natalie, and William.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at First United Methodist Church. Rev. Dick Humphrey, Rev. Louis Blakenbaker and Rev. Henry Boudon will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Monday at Hixson Funeral Home in Westlake and Tuesday 12 Noon til time of service at the Church.
