A celebration of the life of Leila Ruth Campbell Reese, age 97, will be held at First Christian Church of Tyler on Tuesday, at 2 p.m., Rev. Chris Pulliam officiating. Graveside services will follow at Gum Springs Cemetery east of Longview at 4 p.m. under the direction of Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Directors of Tyler. Residing for a short time at Summer Meadows in Longview, Mrs. Reese peacefully left this life on Feb. 13, 2010.

The youngest of four daughters of Thomas Duncan Campbell Jr. and Lella Brank Barnett Campbell, Leila was born on Sept. 18, 1912, in the White Oak community near Longview. She was a member of a pioneer East Texas family. The granddaughter of Republic of Texas Congressman Stephen Slade Barnett and early Longview mayor Thomas Duncan Campbell, and the niece of former Governor Thomas Mitchell Campbell and Judge James N. Campbell, she was an avid family historian.

A graduate of Longview High School at age16, she married her high school sweetheart, Louis Herman Reese, in 1931. Leila attended the American Institute of Banking and worked at the former First National Bank of Longview from 1933 to 1950, by which time she had become the head teller. During World War II, her husband served for more than three years in the U.S. Army in Italy and North Africa. Throughout the war, Leila and Herman corresponded daily, and close to 1,000 letters from her soldier still remain with her family, a lasting tribute to more than 65 years of marriage.

Following the birth of their daughter Ellen in 1950, Leila dedicated herself to her home and family. Moving to Tyler in 1955, Leila became a homemaker, master gardener and volunteer, particularly with First Christian Church of Tyler where she and Herman were a vital part of an active community of love and faith. She served as Fidelis Class president, CWF secretary, and as a deacon. A longtime member of the old Tyler Camellia Club, Texas and American Camellia Societies, Leila and Herman grew and freely shared hundreds of varieties of camellias and even served as national judges. Leila was also a charter member of the East Texas Genealogical Society, a legacy member of Preservation Longview, and a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

Preceded in death by her husband, Louis Herman Reese; three infant children; and by her three sisters, Nelwyn Knighton, Rosebud Pannell and Lottye Cherry, she is survived by her daughter and son-in-law. Ellen and Jay Gordon of Longview; granddaughter, Leah Gordon of Jacksonville; grandson, Reese Gordon of Dallas; nephew, David Debenport of Longview; and niece, Jane Bingham of Walden, Colo.

Pallbearers will be Reese Gordon, David Debenport, Keith Mize, Dart Leigh, James White and Thomas White. Robert Wheeless will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

If desired, memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Tyler; First United Methodist Church of Longview; the Alzheimer's Association; or Heart's Way Hospice of Longview.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Monday at Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Home in Tyler.
