She was one of two children born to Roger and Byrda Ellen (Leonard) Gathright. Janet grew up in the Yosemite area of northern California. She graduated from George Fox University in 1967, and earned her teaching certification at Stanislaus State University in 1968.
Janet was a teacher; who taught in Gales Creek from 1970 to 1979. She attended Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA from 1980 to 1998, where she earned advanced degrees, and also taught. In 1998 she moved to Banks, OR to become a caregiver to her mother and father.
Since Janet had a love for teaching she also substituted, taught and tutored at Visitation Catholic School in Verboort, St Francis Catholic School in Roy, and at Tom McCall Upper Elementary in Forest Grove.
Janet volunteered for various organizations, had a love for animals especially cats, and played the flute. Her hobbies were gardening, reading, and crafts as well as writing poetry and music. As a Recorded Friends [Quaker] Minister, she pastored three churches in her career, most recently holding Sunday services at Cornell Estates for those unable to attend other churches. She was a member of Hillsboro Friends Church where she preached twice a month.
She is preceded in death by her parents and a half brother; David R. Gathright.
Survivors include her sister; Nancy Gathright of Banks, OR, a half brother; Teddy R. Gathright of San Jose, CA, and eleven nieces and nephews.
