Married Samuel Buckley, 1836, Rothdale, Lancashire, England

Married James Hardy Fielding, 27 April 1861, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah

History - Mary Ann Dawtry (Dotre, Daughtery) was born April 14, 1814 in Crompton, Lancashire, England. Nothing is known of her childhood and on the Endowment House records, she gives only the name of her mother.

She married Joseph Cocker, a coal miner, Dec 10, 1832 and they had two young children before he died in 1836. She later married Samuel Buckley and they had eight children.

Mary Ann and her oldest daughter, Mary, joined the Mormon Church in 1844 and were baptized by John Yates at the 1844 Manchester conference. Mary Ann had a very, very strong testimony of the gospel and her desire was to be with the Saints in Utah.

She made the difficult decision to leave her husband and most of her family in England and sailed to America. Mary Ann listed as forty years old, along with her 16 year old daughter, Ann, and one year old son, Peter, sailed from England on the ship Marshfield, 8 Apr 1854. She was originally scheduled to go on the John M. Wood ship but didn't have the money for passage and was transferred to the Marshfield.

She came across with passage paid by the Perpetual Emigration Fund. There were 366 Saints aboard bound for New Orleans. The voyage was a very pleasant one and took 51 days from Liverpool. It arrived 29 May 1854 in New Orleans. They went up the Mississippi River to St. Louis and then took steamboats to Kansas City.

Family records indicate that both of Mary Ann's children died and there is no record of them when she arrived in the valley. The date of her arrival is unknown, but she traveled on the ship with the James Fielding family whom she knew from Shaw, Lancashire, England and their family arrived in the valley October 24, 1854. She boarded with various families in the valley and was a midwife.

She paid her living expenses and sent the rest of her money home to family in England so whoever wanted to come to America would have the money to do so. Mary Ann's daughter, Mary, came with her young son, William, and many years later, three grandchildren eventually came to America.

Mary Ann lived in the Millcreek area then moved in with the Fielding family and was a member of the 6th Ward in Salt Lake City.

James Fielding's first wife, Ann, died 16 Dec 1859. Mary Ann received her endowments and was married to James Fielding on 27

April 1861 in the Endowment House. Mary Ann helped raise the children from his first marriage.

Mary Ann attended her meetings and was a member of her ward Relief Society. She remained a faithful Saint having sacrificed much to come to Salt Lake. She died of jaundice 25 Nov. 1882 and is buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
