Deceased Name: Angela M. Champ
HARWICH -- Angela M. Champ, 19, of Harwich, died on Tuesday at approximately 3 p.m. of injuries sustained from an automobile accident.

Champ died when her Toyota Corolla crossed the center line of Route 6 and collided with a minivan driven by Warren D. Hayes, 79, with his passenger wife, Barbara, 67, both of Harwich.

Before the accident, they had left a luncheon in Orleans with her old school friends. They left in separate cars to meet up in Hyannis, but the Hayeses never arrived, said Kathleen Tanguay of Harwich, Mrs. Hayes' sister.

Angela, a graphic arts graduate of the Cape Cod Tech School, was an aspiring artist and author, with her first children's book published last year.

Angela was attending Cape Cod Community College continuing her love of graphic arts and reading.

She was a very loving and sweet young girl who had her whole life ahead of her.

She is survived by her father, Joseph A. Champ of Harwich; a sister, Maria Champ of Harwich; her mother, Gina Champ of West Dennis; a nephew, Aiden Champ of Harwich; her grandparents, Daniel and Louise Champ of Duxbury, and Geno and Shirley Capozzi of Yarmouth; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and her many friends, who will miss her dearly.

We love you Angela. Now you are an Angel in Heaven.

Angela wrote this for all to see in Facebook:

"I want to be remembered as the girl who always smiles even when her heart is broken; And the one who could brighten anyone else's day even when she couldn't brighten her own."

Visitation will be held on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, from 4 to 7 p.m, at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 260 Main St., West Harwich. A Mass of Christian burial will be on Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, at 11 a.m., at Our Lady of the Cape Church, 482 Stony Brook Road, West Brewster. Burial is private.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, Attn: Angela Champ Scholarship Fund, 351 Pleasant Lake Ave., Harwich, MA 02645. Please make checks payable to Cape Cod Regional Technical High School. On check memo line, please write Angela Champ.

Suicide Alley Victim
A section of Route 6, the highway that takes our visitors from Bourne to Provincetown, also has another name: "Suicide Alley." The stretch from Dennis to Orleans, in particular (exits 9 to 12), is hazardous because the highway narrows to two lanes. From 1970 to 1989, 36 people were killed in highway accidents on this 12.8 mile stretch, most involving head-on collisions.

The tragedy that put "Suicide Alley" into the spotlight was a head-on crash that killed a young mother and her two children. On April 18, 1989, a Brewster woman, Lois Ann Scholomiti, and her children, Lauren and Nicholas, died in Brewster when their eastbound station wagon veered into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with a truck. It was this tragedy that fueled plans to make "Suicide Alley" safer for drivers. The improvements completed in 1991 included installation of a 3-foot-wide berm and reflectors along the center line, road-widening and elimination of all passing.

Then, in August 29, 1998, Kathleen ‘Kay' Bader, retired head librarian at Snow Library in Orleans, died in a crash along this same dangerous ribbon of road. She was between Exits 10 and 11 in East Harwich at the time of the accident. More recently, Angela Champ, a 19-year-old Harwich woman died when her 1996 Toyota Corolla crossed the center line and collided with a 2004 Chrysler minivan on the highway near the Orleans town line. Although the minivan flipped as a result of the accident, the elderly occupants were treated for injuries that weren't considered life-threatening.

If you plan to travel down-Cape this summer, slow down as you drive along the "Suicide Alley" stretch, turn on your headlights, and reflect on the people who lost their lives here.
