Clesson Beckwith
A common sorrow touched the hearts of the people of Adams county Thursday, when it was learned that Clesson Beckwith, a young man
of whom the county had been justly proud, had passed away at Des Moines following an operation for appendicitis. The body was brought
to Mt. Etna and funeral services were held at the M. E. Church, Sunday at 2 p. m, conducted by Chaplain, Major Purdy, interment was made in the Mt. Etna cemetery with full military honors.
Clesson Beckwith, son of Cecil and Louisa Beckwith, was born in Mt. Etna, Iowa, December 11, 1905, and passed away from this life April 4, 1935 at the age of 30 years, 3 months and 33 days. Clesson spent his boyhood. and received elementary education in Mt. Etna where he united with the Church of the Brethren at an early age. He graduated from the Corning high school with the class of 1922 after which he taught school in Adams county for two and one-half years. He then entered the Iowa State University at Iowa City where he studied medicine and received his degree with honors in 1932.
While at school In Iowa city, he was affiliated with the Alpha Kappa Kappa medical fraternity and was elected to Alpha Omega and Alpha Sigma XI honorary fraternities. It was while he was in college that he met and married Miss Bertha Eckler of Lenox, Iowa. To
this union was born one daughter, Barbara Lee, age ten months. After receiving Ms degree, Clesson was admitted to the Army medical corps and was stationed at Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco, California. After serving several places along the coast., he entered the Army Medical School
at Carlisle, Penn., from which he graduated in May, 1935. Following this he moved to Des Moines
where he was serving in the capacity of head surgeon at the lime of his passing.
Besides his wife and daughter, Clesson leaves to sorrow, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Beckwith, of Coming, three brothers and three sisters, Fondeen, Marjorie and Tommy, at home. Dr. T. I. Beckwith, St. Joseph, Mo.; Mrs. Gladys Barnes, Sigourney, Iowa; Duane Beckwith, Massena, Iowa, An Infant sister, Violet, preceded
him in death. Other than his family Clesson leaves a great number of friends in his professional and social life who will sadly miss his cheerful and tender friendliness.
