Leonard E. Thurman, age 83 of Battle Creek, died Thursday, March 25, 1999 at his home. He was born March 8, 1916 in Bledsoe County, TN, the son of Obie Darr and Della Cordelia (Harris) Thurman. He attended school in Tennessee. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corp before serving in WW II in the U.S. Army as a Tech. Sergeant, from January 8, 1938 to March 3, 1945. After his military service he lived in Louisiana and then moved to Battle Creek in 1950. He was employed by Grand Trunk Western Railroad as a car inspector for 23 years, retiring in 1974. He formerly did construction in Battle Creek. He enjoyed John Wayne films, vegetable gardening, travel, hunting, fishing and bird watching. He was a good father. He was a life member of the D.A.V. and a member of the National Rifle Association. He married Margaret Ruth (Guillet) Thurman in Colfax, LA on September 14, 1941, and she survives. Also surviving are children Ed "Leon" and Brigitte Thurman of Boerne, TX; Donna J. and Roy Farley of Tempe, AZ; Beverly and John Walters of Hickory Corners, MI; Kenneth and Florinda Thurman of Dawsonville, GA; and Guy and Christine Thurman of Bellevue, MI; 13 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; sister, Gladys Daniels of Battle Creek. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant granddaughter; 2 sisters, Rosie Mathis and Rachel Dodson; 5 brothers, Floyd, Buster, Ralph, Lawrence and Elder Thurman. Burial at the Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens.
