Born in Andover, he attended Punchard High School and later joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He was a veteran of World War II, served from 1942 to 1945 and attained the rank of coxswain.
He worked for the Tyer Rubber Company and for Converse Rubber Company in Andover for many years, and had been retired for the past 15 years. Roland had been a self-employed carpenter for many years. He had been a resident of Andover for 60 years.
Roland was a loving husband and father, who raised six boys. He never turned anyone away and always took in friends and relatives when they were in need. He devoted his life to his family and his friends. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing and he loved pro wrestling.
Family members include his loving wife of 60 years, Claire S. (Porter) Gallant; sons, John and his wife Susan, Steven and his wife Dee, Timothy and his wife Kathleen, Dennis and his wife Wendy, and Kevin; a brother, Francis and a sister, Mary Deschenes; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late Michael Gallant and the brother of the late Reginald, Clarence Gallant and Eleanor Gardner.
Funeral services were held on Thurday, January 4th at the Croswell Funeral Home, 19 Bow Street in North Reading.
Taps were played and the American Flag was folded and presented to his wife, Claire, by a U.S. Navy Honor Guard.
