Mae I. Danner
Catawba, N.C. - Mae I. Danner, 96, of Windsor Point in Fuquay-Varina, and formerly of East Central Avenue, Catawba, died Thursday, July 9, 2009, at Windsor Point.
Born Nov. 10, 1912, in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late John Lemuel Franklin Danner, veteran of the Civil War, and the late Effie Mae Cody Danner.
She attended Mars Hill College from 1931 until 1933 and received her RN degree from the North Carolina Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in 1941. In 1942, at 30 years of age, she joined the Army Nurse Corp and served with the 105th Evacuation Hospital, which landed on Omaha Beach, Normandy, on Oct. 4, 1944, and traveled through Scotland, England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Capt. Danner was discharged from the Army on Jan. 7, 1947. In 1948, she earned her B.A. degree at Carson Newman College, Tennessee. She nursed at the Central Carolina Convalescent Hospital (Polio Hospital) in Greensboro from 1948 until 1958 and then in pediatrics at Greensboro's Cone Memorial Hospital until she retired in 1974.
In addition to her parents, Ms. Danner was preceded in death by three brothers, Ray Emmitt Danner, George Dewey Danner and John Samuel Danner, and three sisters, Annie Pearl Witherspoon, Edna Eula Danner and Susie Alice Danner.
Survivors include eight nieces and nephews, as well as several grand and great-grandnieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, July 13, 2009, at Drum Funeral Home chapel in Conover. Dr. J. Michael Simmons, pastor of Buies Creek First Baptist Church, will officiate.
Burial will follow in Catawba United Methodist Church Cemetery in Catawba.
