Sarah Elizabeth Lovitt was born at Terre Haute, Henderson county, Ill., March 3, 1855, and died at her home in Johnstown, Nebr., March 9, 1929, being therefore 74 years and six days of age.
She was a daughter of Samuel and Lydia Heisler Hunter and was one of a family of twelve children only seven of whom are yet living. They are: Joseph Hunter, Will Hunter and Mrs. Hattie Poff of Clyde, Kansas, John Hunter and Miss Mary Hunter of Pomona, Cal., Mrs. Olive Sperry of Gresham, Nebr., and Mrs. Delilah Price of Agenda, Kansas.
She grew to womanhood in her native county and was there married to John M. Lovitt on December 12, 1872. To this union were born seven children, all of whom with the devoted husband are left to mourn the loss of mother and wife.
After living in Illinois a number of years the family came to Nebraska reaching Brown county March 10, 1886.
Their first residence was on a homestead six miles south of Johnstown, where they endured the hardships common to all new countries with the spirit of true pioneers.
Of Mrs. Lovitt, it may be truly be said "The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her. She looketh well to the ways of her household and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up and call her blessed, her husband also, and he praiseth her!"
Many years ago they moved into the present family residence in Johnstown. In 1896 Mrs. Lovitt joined the M. E. church in Johnstown and remained a consistent member the rest of her life.
She was also a charter member of both the Rebekah and Degree of Honor lodges, of Johnstown and was active and industrious in both until failing health compelled her to give them up.
For more than two years she had been almost continually confined to her home and in the last months had suffered greatly but with patience and fortitude, being tenderly cared for by husband and children to the end. The children are: Burdette L. of Enders Lake, Nebr., Fenton K. of Johnstown, Claude of Torrington, Wyo., Mrs. Maude Richardson of Waltman, Wyo., Archibald of South Bend, Ind., Mrs. Madge Townsend of Arabia, Nebr., and Mrs. Stella Wynant of Kimball, Nebr.
Her going marks the first break in the family circle.
There are also thirty-five grand children and seven great grand children. One son, Archie, was unable to attend the funeral which was held in the Johnstown M. E. church on Monday, March 11, attended by a host of relatives and old friends come to pay their last respects to one who will be greatly missed.
Services were conducted by Rev. James Ames, and interment was made in Wood Lawn cemetery.
