He was the son of Pleasant and Betty (Shockley) Dalton.
He married Pearl Louisa Coffey on March 29, 1917, in Hamblen County, Tennessee. They were the parents of Charles Wilbur, James Carroll, and Annie Ruth Dalton.
After he and his first wife were divorced, he married Ethel Alexander on Dec. 14, 1929, in Hamblen County, Tennessee. They had no children.
He enlisted as a Pvt. in the U.S. Army on Aug. 2, 1918. He served in France as a Pvt. in Headquarters Troop, 8th Army Corps, American Expeditionary Force in World War I. He was honorably discharged from the Army on June 14, 1919.
