Obituary published by The Dalles Chronicle; October 21, 2004

Vernon Earl Cochenour was born in Campbell, Nebraska on April 2, 1919. Vern passed away on October 11, 2004 in The Dalles, Oregon. He was the eldest of 6 boys and 2 girls born to Dayne and Faye (Potts) Cochenour. The girls died at birth in Nebraska. Vern was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Morris, Harlin, and Marlin.
In 1933, Vern and his family moved to North Dalles, which is now known as Dallesport. While there, he worked picking fruit in Mabton, Yakima, The Dalles and Hood River. He worked for a time at the Hood River Hospital and did jack-hammer work at the Dallesport Airport. After his marriage to Selma Myhr on November 10, 1940, he went to work on the dock in The Dalles. On September 10, 1942, they had their only son, Daniel Myhr who was born in The Dalles. In December on 1942, they moved to the ranch in Lyle. After that Vern worked as a logger in various mills and drove logging truck for SD&S Logging Company for a number of years. That whole time he maintained the farm at home.
Vern was very fond of fishing, particularly in the Klickitat River and at Underwood from The Bench. He never met a stranger and would invite the people he met while fishing up to the ranch to hunt. He personally enjoyed hunting for deer, elk and gray diggers. Vern learned how to play the guitar and banjo by ear. He began playing these instruments with his father and grandfather in Nebraska. He enjoyed going to dances. Other things he enjoyed were painting, playing cribbage, telling stories, rooting for the Nebraska football team, observing nature, listening to polka music, listening on the scanner, and riding his horse, Pal which he did in his younger days.
Vern was preceded in death by his wife Selma, who died in January of 1984. On May 5th of 1984, he married Edith Marsh Sexton, also known as Marshie, of Lyle. They met each other at Senior Dances. She died on September 12, 1995.
Vern is survived by his son Daniel Cochenour and daughter-in-law Evelyn of Lyle; stepdaughter Judy Thomas of Yakima, stepson Allen Sexton of Dallesport, and two brothers Larry and Lester D. Cochenour both of The Dalles. He is also survived by four nieces, 14 nephews, 13 grandkids, 12 great grandkids and the Sexton family.

A Fisherman's Prayer

I pray that I may live to fish...
Until my dying day.
And when it comes to my last cast,
I then most humbly pray:
When in the Lord's great landing net
And peacefully asleep
That in His mercy I be judged
Big enough to keep.
