"Grandfather's Truck Claims Life of 5-year-old Salem Boy--A 5-year-old Salem boy died Friday after being accidentally struck by a truck driven by his grandfather, Marion County Sheriff's Department said.
Samuel Edward POUND was pronounced dead on arrival at a Salem hospital shortly after the 11:35 a.m. accident, officials said. He was reportedly suffered head injuries.
The boy was struck after he apparently rode his bicycle out to meet his grandfather's approaching semi-truck and 40-foot van, deputies said. As the truck, driven by Samuel SMITH, 1352 63rd Ave NE, began backing up into Cottonwood Drive NE, the boy and bicycle were run over by the right front wheel of the truck, according to deputies.
Pound's grandparents, whom he lived with, were taking him to the hospital when they were met by an ambulance, officials said.
No citation was issued and the accident is still under investigation, the sheriff's department said.
The death was the 18th traffic fatality this year in Marion County and 54th in the Mid-Willamette Valley." Oregon Statesman, July 27, 1979.
