The son of John & Hannah (Bear) Bittinger, in 1860 he was carpenter living in Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall, had hazel eyes, and a heart & spear tattoo on right arm. He married Maggie J. Love September 17, 1861, in Littlestown, Adams County, and fathered Effie L. (b. 06/06/62 - married Cornelius Alexander Willhide), Grant C. (b. 05/14/65), and Janey B. (b. 01/17/77).

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted at the stated age of twenty-five in York County November 11, 1862, and mustered into federal service at York November 12 as a private with Co. F, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia." Reported as a deserter at York to date November 29, 1862, he was actually ill in the hospital and did not join the regiment for duty until April 30, 1863. He honorably discharged with his company on July 28, 1863, in York.

He moved to Baltimore later in life.
