Lola Grace Smith, 97, of Denison, passed away Jan. 25, 2009 at TMC. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009 at the Chapel on the Hill at Cedarlawn Memorial Park in Sherman with Dr. Tom Peel officiating.
Lola was born on May 13, 1911 in a log cabin northwest of Pottsboro, the first of seven children to Thomas Hiram Brown and Edna Hodges Brown. She married William Bruce Smith on Feb. 2, 1935 in Sadler. Bruce's father and two uncles came from Arkansas and founded Hagerman which later became Hagerman National Park. Bruce and Lola lived in Hagerman from the time they were married until 1942 when they moved to Denison.
Due to Bruce's career with Corps of Engineers they lived in several towns before retirement when they moved back to Denison in 1976. Lola was a member of Waples Memorial United Methodist Church and for the past 8 1/2 years has resided at Wesley Village Retirement Center.
Lola was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bruce Smith in 1994 and a grandson, Ken Clement in 2003, a brother Earl Thomas Brown and sisters, Ada Perrin and Jennie Perrin.
Lola is survived by one daughter Nelda Bernadine Martin and husband Jack of Denison, granddaughter Kathy Mullens and husband Ronnie of Denison and a granddaughter-in-law Toni Clement of Ector. Also surviving are her sisters Hannah Watts of Denison, Iwannah Bailey of Sherman and Fay Collins of Fort Worth.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
