Elmer Adkins - 1921-2009

Elmer J. Adkins, 87, of South Shore, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, in Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth.

He was born Nov. 6, 1921, in Greenup County, a son of the late James D. and Myrtle Lawson Adkins.

He was retired from Norfolk and Southern Railroad and a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served during World War II. He was a farmer and a trader.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Hall Adkins, on Dec. 3, 1990; two sons, Michael Adkins and David Adkins; a brother, Oscar Adkins; and three sisters, Goldie Timberlake, Edna Hardin and Carrie Donaldson.

Survivors include three daughters, Sharon Kay Halbert of Wailuku, Hawaii, Judy Maloney of Roswell, Ga., and Marnie Sosnovsky of Woodstock, Ga.; a sister, Gladys White of Maysville; and a great-granddaughter, Jordan Sosnovsky.

Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family by the Rev. David Gross. Burial will be in Bennett's Chapel Cemetery on Ky. 2 at South Shore, with military graveside rites by James A. Flannery American Legion Post 276 of South Shore.

Friends may call at from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore.
