Mr. Joseph Alexander Goforth, 84, Shelby, NC, passed away Friday, December 12, 2008 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Burial: Beulah United Methodist Church.

A native of Cleveland Co., NC, Mr. Goforth graduated from Waco High School and from National Welding School in Nashville, TN.

He served our country in the U.S. Merchant Marines–WWII. After serving in the war, he was appointed to the Merchant Marines Academy where he served for 2 years.

He was Co-founder and Co-owner of Goforth Brothers: Manager of Cleveland Count Fair for 28 years.

He was a member of Beulah United Methodist Church where he served as Chairman of Trustees, Chairman of Administrative Board, Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of Cemetery and Building Committee, and charge Conference Representative.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George E. and Elizabeth P. Goforth; 1 son, Joseph Alexander Goforth, Jr.; 1 sister, Zella Sweezy; and 5 brothers, John Goforth, Charles Goforth, George Goforth, Sam Goforth, and Coleman Goforth.
