4th Child and 3rd Son of George Robert Gilchrist and Elizabeth Ann McArthur. Maurice was a carpenter by trade and served in the 8th Royal Rifles of Canada before enlisting in the 73rd Battalion - Royal Highlanders which was the Canadian "Black Watch". Maurice departed Canada for the last time on 31 March 1916 from Halifax, Nova Scotia aboard the S.S. Adriatic. He spent the next year training in England before shipping out to Belgium on 12 August 1916. His Battalion was moved to Ypres where he was killed in action in the trenches around Wijtschate, Belgium.
