William 'Wolfgang' Hacker came to the United States when he was about 13 years old. He was the oldest child of a family of eight children. Two brothers and one sister died before adulthood.
He married Maria Herr and they had five children, one died in infancy. The surviving children were; Elizabeth Lee Bucher Shipley, William Edward Hacker, Elmer Frank Hacker and Ida Elsie Hacker Leemann.
