William Vandoran Hatt was a lifelong resident of Montgomery County, Indiana. He was born on 19 September 1958, on a farm near Alamo, Ripley Township, Montgomery County, Indiana to Joseph Vandoran Hatt and his wife Mary E. Keys Hatt. Joseph and Mary Hatt both died in 1861 and left William and his sister Martha Emma Hatt orphans. They were cared for by relatives of their mother's family.

William married Salina Elizabeth Butcher Palmer on 22 October 1899 at Alamo. There were four children born of this union, Albert Vandoran, Joseph William "Joe," Martha Ellen and a daughter that died as an infant. Mrs. Hatt had a daughter, Blanche E. Palmer (Meadows), by a previous marriage.

Mr. and Mrs. Hatt spend their entire married life on te farm where William died on 17 January 1938.
