Philip Joseph Schapiro (1927-2015) was born in New York City to parents Frieda Weizenberg and Harry Schapiro. He and his brother Arnold Schapiro grew up in New York City. Philip Schapiro graduated from the prestigious Townsend Harris High School. After his Naval service, he received a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Cornell University. He subsequently received a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Oklahoma, where he pursued research in theoretic mathematics and string theory. He married professor ~ ; they had a daughter ~ now a surgeon at ~. Dr. Schapiro was a professor of mathematics at the University of Oklahoma and Langston University until he retired in 2010.
