SOURCE: Obit written by Marian Sue McElwee, Mr. Long's great-granddaughter, from info compiled from research done in courthouses & historical societies in Huntingdon, Mifflin, and Perry counties during the 1990s and from the Jan 15, 1874 issue of The Gospel Messenger, a publication of the Church of the Brethren during the late 19th century.

Eli W. Long, of Otelia, died as his home on December 31, 1883, aged 38y, 5m and 15d. He was born July 16, 1845, in Greenwood Township (Pfoutz Valley), Perry Co, the son of John and Catherine Long. He was united in marriage with Sarah J. Bard on January 2, 1873, at McVeytown.

Surviving are his wife, at their home; five children: Hiriam James, Jerome Herbert, Anna LaRue, Harrison Freemont, and John Dallas, the eldest being nine years of age, the youngest, one year.

Eli was one of eight children, his brothers and sisters being Elizabeth, Mary, Catherine, Aaron, John, Isaac, and Salome, his twin (the twins were the youngest in the family).

According to oral account from now-deceased family members, Mr. Long was a farmer and traveling salesman, selling medicinal supplies from his wagon. Supposedly, Eli suffered from fragile health, being "rather sickly." For several years after their marriage, Mr. Long and his family lived near Longfellow, in Bratton Twp, Mifflin Co. In 1878, he and his wife purchased property at Otelia, in Shirley Twp, Huntingdon Co, and the family moved there.

He was a member of the Aughwick congregation of the Church of the Brethren. Funeral services were held at his late home and at the Aughwick Church, conducted by Elder James R. Lane. Interment was made in the Germany Valley Cemetery.
