John "JD" Bates, age 86, of Rogersville passed away on Thursday, January 25, 2024. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather who will be deeply missed.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Betty Jean Boatman Bates; parents, Claude and Ella Mae Bates; son, Lee Roy Bates; great grandson, Hayden Leroy Murrell; son in law, Leonard Ramsey; and several brothers and sisters.

John is survived by his daughters, Joann Rines and Tammy Ramsey; grandchildren, Crystal (Freddy) Klepper, Tina (John) Reagan, Dennis (Titeenia) Murrell, Billy (Dreama) Murrell, and Eric Davis; great grandchildren, Brittany, Hunter, Sabrina, Ernie, Brayden, Christian, Jacob, Mel, Gracie, Addison, Kolby, Paityn, Paislei, Lukas, Alexis, Bella, and Braedon; brother, Claude (Linda) Bates; sister, Rosemary (Lloyd) Swaney; and a host of nieces and nephews; special friend, Tina Gonzales.

The family will receive friends from 11-1 pm on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at Smith Reagan Funeral Home with funeral services will follow at 1pm. Graveside services will follow funeral at Shiloh UMC Cemetery in Rutledge, TN.
