Darce Vernile Prince
July 1, 1947 - November 29, 2023 (age 76)

Darce Vernile was born on July 1st, 1947 and passed away on November 29th, 2023 at the age of 76.

Darce Vernile Prince, 76, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at St. George Regional Hospital in St. George, Utah. He was known for his constant love of family, broad range of skills and interests, and lifelong devotion to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He will be sorely missed.

Vernile was born on July 1, 1947 in Cedar City, Utah to Darce M. Prince and Lorna Belle Anderson. Despite suffering the tragic loss of his mother as a child, he enjoyed an idyllic rural upbringing in New Harmony, Utah, where he had plenty of room to explore, hunt and run free with siblings, friends and cousins. His father remarried, blessing Vernile with a caring second mother, Camilla Pace, who he loved dearly. Vernile's parents taught him such important values as faith in God, love of country and hard work, which remained with him throughout his life.

Vernile attended Cedar High School as a member of the Class of 1965, many of whom have remained close friends to this day. Among those friends was a red-haired cutie, Elma Lynne Sandberg. Their first date to the Sweetheart Ball was the beginning of a tender romance and 54 years of marriage, which began with their wedding in the St. George LDS temple on June 14, 1969.

As a young man, Vernile served an LDS mission to Australia. He graduated from Brigham Young University and began his career as a lineman for a rural telephone exchange. Vernile remained a loyal employee with the same company for 35 years, eventually retiring as President of All West Communications.

Vernile and Elma Lynne raised their family in Cokeville, Wyoming and Kamas, Utah. He was a strong and capable provider, a supportive, involved father and a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. His children Darin (Suzanne), Clay (Lori), Jillyn (Kenneth) and Joel (Tiffany) will remember him as a fun-loving, funny, adventurous man with boundless curiosity, a contagious laugh and endless zest for life. He enjoyed a special, unique relationship with each of his seventeen grandchildren, and was loved and admired by them. He felt fortunate to have become great-grandfather to one baby girl, with one more baby boy on the way at the time of his passing.

He was a natural leader, serving for many years in various regional and national professional associations where he was known for his practical, commonsense style. Vernile served faithfully in many church callings, including many years leading youth as Young Men's President and Scoutmaster. He was a committed home teacher and ministering brother. He served simultaneously as Bishop of his ward and Mayor of Kamas City. He served a mission to Guam Micronesia with his beloved "Ellie," fulfilling a lifelong dream.

Vernile engaged with and maintained an ever-evolving range of hobbies, skills, and interests throughout his life. He rode and broke horses. He painted with oils. He loved music, and experimented with guitar, accordion and harmonica. He was a master photographer and a talented writer. Vernile explored much of the world through travel. He hiked to the tops of tall peaks and ventured to the depths of the ocean with SCUBA gear. He caught fish in all kinds of waters from Alaska to Mexico. Later in life, he learned woodturning and created many beautiful artistic pieces for family and friends.

In retirement, Vernile returned home to New Harmony and built a paradise on earth in the shadow of the Kolobs. There, he expertly cultivated flower gardens, fruit trees, and a productive vegetable garden. He created his own fishing pond, and cared for his horses and beautiful yard. This home became a precious gathering place where his family has created cherished memories.

A viewing will be held at the LDS Chapel in New Harmony, Utah on Friday, December 8 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A second viewing will be held at the same location on Saturday, December 9 from 9:30 to 10:30 am, with funeral services commencing at 11:00 am. A graveside service will follow at the New Harmony Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary. www.mortuary.org
