Dorothy was born on December 3, 1941, into a large family on the farm in Kearny County, near Deerfield, Kansas. She was raised in a strong Catholic faith. Dorothy graduated from Holcomb High School in Deerfield, Kansas. She married Darrel Fairchild on February 24, 1960, in Garden City, Kansas. They had two children, Sheldon and Lisa. In 1970 the refinery in Garden City closed so the family moved to Okmulgee where Darrel worked at the OKC Refinery. Dorothy worked for several years as a telephone operator. Later, she worked at the Okmulgee Day Care as a cook and enjoyed every minute of her over twenty years there. During this time, she was also a caretaker to her husband and gave him kidney dialysis treatments three times a week in their home. During the summer she was busy helping mow lawns, working in their garden, canning and watching the kids play in their sports. No matter what, you always knew her and Darrel would be in the stands to cheer you on. Dorothy also enjoyed fishing and camping.
