St. George, UT - Della Cottam Maggard, 88, died February 28,2008 in St. George, Utah. She was born on July 17, 1919 in St. George, Utah to Arthur P. and Mary Mae Pritchard Cottam. She married the love of her life, Schuyler Maggard (1913-1969), on November 30, 1939.

Della was a very hard worker even as a child growing up in a farming and ranching family. Her father often commented that he could always count on his "little Dell" to "tromp" hay and help with the other chores. Della had seven brothers and sisters and grew up during the great depression where they all learned the versatility of a potato sack, as well as the true meaning of the saying "Wear it in, wear it out. Make it do, or do without." As a painfully shy and freckled child, she was often teased as the "red-headed peach bird." She would have the last laugh though, soon becoming one of Southern Utah's most stunning beauties, though too humble to ever realize it. When she was 14 or 15 years old, she began her career as a beautician by apprenticing for a local hairdresser. After graduating high school, she went to beauty school in Salt Lake City, Utah. Upon accreditation from Quish Beauty School, she moved back to St.George and met the love of her life, Schuyler Maggard, while at a dance at the old recreation center. Love at first sight never had truer meaning. After their marriage, she opened her own beauty parlor, "Della's Beauty Shop", in St.George on Main Street. She would eventually move the shop into her own home to be closer with her children, and her career as a beautician spanned over 50 years. Schuyler died at a young age and Della became the sole support for her children. Without a moment's hesitation, she took on this role and never complained. She had breakfast ready for her children every morning and made sure they were to school on time, and then work until late, sometimes 9 or 10 at night in the shop. At the urging of her children to work less hours, she began working for Dixie Regional Medical Center. Even after working a full day at the hospital, she would still do hair for some of her long time clientele until very late at night. She had a tender heart for the disabled and special needs volunteers that she mentored. She retired from the hospital at age 69.

Della had a very generous heart of gold and would never hesitate to help anyone, anytime, however she could. She had a devious smile, a quick wit, and a love of laughter. You could often find her tapping her foot to the radio, or humming a tune while she worked. Everyone in our family knew the nutritional value of mom's favorite fruit, a banana, "The world's most perfect food," she'd say. Della always had a green thumb and grew beautiful roses in her yard. She was the only person we knew of that enjoyed pulling weeds and always tried to get "Those darn puncture burrs!" out. She enjoyed the outdoors and fishing with her daughters and grandchildren. Della's compassion was not only for people, but for animals as well. She adored her nieces and nephews who knew her fondly as "Aunt Dee Dee". Mom loved to go to the Cottam family reunions in the summer. Della was one of the greatest treasures this world has ever known. Her compassion, kindness, and enthusiasm lives on through those fortunate enough to have known this amazing woman. She will be greatly missed, and never forgotten.

She is survived by her children: Marilee (Wally) Brown of St. George, UT, Doug (Laura) Maggard of Provo, UT, Julie (Georg) Hotchkiss of St. George, UT and Lori (Ted) Taylor of Winchester Hills, UT, ten grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and her sister, Mary (L.K.) Abbott of St. George, UT. She was preceded in death by her husband, Schuyler and infant son, Steven Curtis, brothers: William, Ronald, Karl, and Edward and sisters: Ruth Smith and Carma Evans.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, March 3, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. George City Cemetery.
