He was the son of Simon Bowens, who lived on Locust Alley.

He had been arrested for attacking a young white woman (Miss Lilly Long, niece of Sheriff Daniel P. Zimmerman) and was intoxicated at the time. Miss Long had been employed by Hamilton Geisbert on the cemetery road.
He was lynched by an angry mob who broke into the jail. He pleaded his innocence.
