Mary "Ellen" Loftus, 83, a lifelong resident of South Scranton, died unexpectedly Wednesday afternoon, September 12, 2001 at her home. She was the widow of John Loftus, who died June 6, 1979.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late John and Lena Gray Weis, she was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School.

Before retirement, she was a bookkeeper for Nino Dinette Cabinetry Co. She was a member of Nativity of Our Lord Church, where she was a former Eucharistic minister and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and the Golden Age Club. She was also a member of St. Mary's After 50 Club.

Surviving are a daughter, Kathy Matyjevich, Dunmore; two sons, William, Laurenburg, N.C.. and John, Hollywood, Md.; a sister, Alice M. O'Malley, Scranton; two granddaughters; two grandsons; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, John C. and James J.

The funeral will be Saturday at 9 a.m. from the Strauch Funeral Home, 602 Birch St., with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Nativity of Our Lord Church. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.
