From her pleasant home in the village of Latta Grove, the spirit of Mrs. Amanda Malvina (Hanawalt) Dell took its flight, October 4, 1927. Mrs. Dell was the daughter of James and Lydia Hanawalt. She was born in Hares Valley, March 3, 1843, hence, was aged 84 years, 7 months and one day at the time of her death. All her life was spent in the valley of her nativity. When young, she became a member of the Methodist Church but, because of greater convenienece, she affiliated with the United Brethren Church during the last forty years. While still in her teens, she became the bride of Peter Dell, now deceased, and with him started to carve a home from the primeval forest on the east side of Clear Ridge in Cass Township. There, toiling together, they developed the homstead where she lived until two years ago. She was the mother of nine boys and five girls, twelve of whom stood by her before interment was made in the Bowmans Chapel Cemetery. Two of her sons, J. Frank and Luden E. preceded her to the grave, the first being 26 years old and the latter 61 years old. Thus, she raised her fourteen children to maturity - a notable Christian record. One half sister, Margaret Hanawalt, of Latta Grove, and the following children survive: George W Dell and Michael E. Dell, Smith Valley; Howard Dell, Knightsville; Oliver Dell, Langdondale; Wesley Dell and David H. Dell, Latta Grove; Miss Martha Dell, Mrs. Anna Stever, and Mrs Jennie Querry, Upper Hares Valley, Mrs. Verna Querry, Latta Grove; Mrs. Bertha Querry, lower Hares Valley. Many grandchildren and great grandchildren miss the smiling goodness of Grandmother Dell. She was a constant Christian help to all who knew her. Her life was an exemplification of modest virtue and neighborly kindness. To know her was to love her.
