LAVALE - After having lived a good long life, and after several months of failing health, Rex W. Burton died peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2020, with his wife Sandra at his side. Rex was a fixture in our business and banking community for more than 60 years and his humor and quiet generosity will be sadly missed.

Born on Sept. 10, 1934, Rex was the son of W. I. and Hazel Burton of Cumberland. The Burton family was long active in local businesses having operated Burton's Inc., the Burton's Shopping Center, in LaVale, and Sunset View Real Estate. Married for 56 years, Rex met the love of his life, Sandra (Stotler) from Berkeley Springs, W.Va., when he was given the opportunity to open a family store, in Winchester, Va., 58 years ago. They have two children, Beth Ann Stafford, who with her husband, Joel, live in Mt. Airy, and Michael Burton, who with his wife, Michelle, live in Fairbanks, Alaska. They have one granddaughter, Laura Beth (Stafford) Strunk, who lives with her husband, Phil, in Winchester, and are expecting Rex's first great-grandson.

On returning to Cumberland, Rex and his brother, Tom, continued to operate Burton's Inc., having four stores in Maryland, including Cumberland, LaVale, Westernport, and Frederick; a store in Johnstown, Pa.; and three stores in Virginia, including Winchester, Harrisonburg, and Staunton. Rex served on the board of directors of Cumberland Savings Bank, the advisory board and the board of directors of First United National Bank and Trust, had been a past president of the Cumberland Rotary, a member of the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce, president of the Downtown Parking Authority, and was a board member of the Downtown Development Commission. He also served in the armed forces for two years. Rex was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Cumberland.

Rex loved talking about business and the community of Cumberland. He enjoyed having lunch with Rich McKenzie, Charlie Howell, Chris Lockard and Lynn Workmeister, discussing, if not solving, the events of the day.

In addition to his wife and children, Rex is survived by his brother, Robert Burton and wife, Donna, of Fredericksburg, Va.; his brother-in-law, Norman Richards, of Rockville; his sister-in-law, Patty Fletcher, of Gore, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Rex was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Frank and Tom; and his sisters, Louise Karlowa, Ruth Richards, and Doris Henry.

Due to the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic, a memorial service to celebrate Rex's life will be held at a later date.
