Truman Essex was born in Rock Island County, Ill., in 1837, where his father, Isaac B. Essex, was one of the earliest settlers in the southern part of that county. In 1864, T. B. enlisted in Company K, One Hundred and Fortieth Illinois Infantry, and was on guard duty in Tennessee. He mustered out in December of the same year, at Springfield, Ill. and returned to Rock Island County, where he ran a nursery and small fruit farm. In 1873 he moved to Nebraska, and settled on Section 1, Town 3, Range 7 east, eight miles east of Beatrice. He claimed a farm of 400 acres with 280 acres under cultivation. In 1881, he was elected one of the county commissioners of Gage County.He was married in Rock Island County, Ill., to Miss Louisa Severns. They had six children--Elmer, Omer, Alma, Mertie, Lelah and Trueman Bennet. He was a member of P. G. of Beatrice Lodge, No. 19, I. O. O. F.
