Life Remembered...Lorena Marie Blount passed away on Monday, December 5, 2022 at her home in Allerton, Iowa. She was born in Boone, Iowa on November 13, 1938 to Carl and Pearl (Allen) Duncan. She attended Allerton High School and went on to further her education at Iowa State where she got a BSC in education. Lorena was married to Ross Blount on August 26, 1960. To this union three sons were born.

As a child, she was baptized in the Allerton Christian Church, where her Grandfather Allen had served as pastor. During college, she spent every summer volunteering with public service projects: 1st summer in a social ministry with children in Indianapolis; 2nd summer in an interracial work camp in east Texas; 3rd summer in an international work camp in Denmark; and during the 4th year she attended a national Christian conference in which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was keynote speaker and where she met her future husband Roswell C. Blount. After marriage, the Blounts joined the US Peace Corps as lecturers at a new university in Nigeria where she taught Freshman English for four years and gave birth to their first son, R.D. After returning from Nigeria, their second child Ben was delivered in Corydon by Doc Garber. The Blounts moved to Hazard, Kentucky where they worked in social service ministries and where their third son, Robert, was born. They moved to Allerton in 1973, where Lorena remained active in the Allerton Presbyterian Church as church leader, piano player, choir director, teacher, bible study leader, spiritual counselor, and mentor. After the kids left for college, she was commissioned by the Presbytery Synod of Lakes and Prairies to work with the Dakota Indian Presbyterian Church to help reconcile communities polarized by past wrongs. She was a naturalist and passionate leader of nature conservation at Bob White State Park and across Wayne County. Over the years, she taught at Lineville High School, Wayne Community High School, and Indian Hills Community College, as well as leading the Talented and Gifted Program at Wayne Community School, 7-12th grades. She was a leader in the community: directing the Allerton Community Plays for 38 years, helping to organize the Allertonworld Fair, and the establishment of a youth and family non-profit center at the Old Time Soda Fountain. Her strong faith led her to believe the best in each of us and to action that belief with laughter, compassion, and energy to draw out our best. Lorena leaves a legacy of joyful encouragement, healed relationships, reinvigorated churches, and strengthened communities. She has touched many people in her life of service and will be dearly missed.

She is preceded in death by her parents Carl and Pearl Duncan; grandparents Robert and Tennie Duncan, and Russell and Isabel Allen.

Funeral services will be December 10, 2022 at 10am at the Allerton Presbyterian Church with interment following at the Allerton Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, December 9, 2022 from 5-7pm at the Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon, Iowa.

Contributions can be made to one of the following: Allerton Presbyterian Church, Bob White State Park, and Old Time Soda Fountain. Condolences may be shared at www.thomasfh.com and at facebook.com/thomasfuneralhome.
