Dr. Jerry L. Mathis, 75, of Salina, KS went home to God peacefully on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 in the arms of his wife at their home after a heroic battle with an especially aggressive form of A.L.S.
He was born December 14, 1935 in Parsons, KS to Lloyd E. and Cecile C. Wellborn Mathis. He spent his childhood in Parsons, graduating from Parsons High School. He received his undergraduate degree from Pittsburg State University and his medical degree in Pediatrics from Kansas University School of Medicine, Kansas City, MO. He served his Pediatric Internship at Ft. Knox, KY and his Residency at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C. After serving several years as an Army Pediatrician he returned to Kansas University School of Medicine for a 2 year Fellowship in Allergy and Immunology. He practiced Pediatric and Adult Allergy in Salina, KS from 1970 to 1985. He then returned to active duty as a Lt. Col and served as Chief of Allergy Services at Ft. Knox, KY for 3 years. In 1988 he opened a private practice in State College and Altoona, PA, where he had a very busy practice until he retired in July 2007. He and his wife then built their dream timber frame home in Salina, KS and returned to his native Kansas roots.
Jerry had numerous and diverse interests. Music was a major love in his life. He sang in his church choirs until shortly before his death. He also sang with the Hollidaysburg Alumni Chorus in PA for 19 years. He was deeply involved with community theatre and performed in many plays and musicals, also helping to build many sets. He was an active member of the Coca-Cola Collectors Club for 35 years and help found the Dr. Pepper Collectors Club. He loved woodworking and had a very busy and extensive shop in his home. He also loved to garden and landscape his yards.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Jack Mathis of Leavenworth, KS, son Mitchell Mathis of Houston, TX and son-in-law Mick Yates of Cecelia, KY.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Audrae, beloved daughter and son-in-law Janette Mathis and Lou Rivetti of Snohomish, WA, daughter-in-law Marilu Hastings of Austin, TX, loving stepchildren Brent Spellman of Gypsum, KS and Kristen Marsh and her husband Tim of Elizabethtown, KY. He leaves behind 5 precious grandchildren, Elena Fe Mathis of Austin, TX, Brittany Nicole Yates of Bowling Green, KY, Michael Shane Yates of Elizabethtown, KY, Brandon Lee Spellman and Logan Scott Spellman of Gypsum, KS. He also is survived by his brother-in-law and wife, Alan and Linda Turner of Derby, KS; sisters-in-law Kathy Gearhart of Derby, KS and Mary Turner of Wichita, KS along with 5 nieces and 2 nephews. There were 2 men he considered "special sons" Chad Schroeder and Greg Kelly, both of Salina who brought such love and laughter to his life. He will be deeply missed by a host of loving friends, neighbors and patients. His passion, wit and boundless energy will be deeply missed by all.
He requested to be cremated and buried with his wife at her passing. A celebration of his life will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, Salina, on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 with Rev. Abby Caseman presiding. There will be no public viewing. The family will greet friends for an hour prior to the service at the church. A second celebration of life will be held in Hollidaysburg, PA at a later date.
