By early 1870's he appeared on the West Coast of the South Island. He was in the business as a sail maker for the sailing ships. Then he made tents for the goldminers in the area. He married Sara Elizabeth Ruddle an Irish lass and had a large family of two boys and four girls. The family lived in Kumara, West Coast.
The family and home and business went up in smoke two times in Kumara, with the hot boiling pots of oil catching fire. About 1890 the family moved to Greymouth where Sara took in laundry to pay for their upkeep. Charles died in 1892 in Greymouth.
