Mathias B. "Cyrus" Sowash was a son of George and Elizabeth Bankert Sowash and a descendant of Johannes H. Sauvage who was born in 1698 either in France or Germany. His siblings were:John; William Henry; Catherine Sowash Cochran; Harriet Sowash; Dr. Millard Fillmore and George. He married Eliza Jane Byerly, daughter of Jacob and Mary Jane Bankert Byerly. Her paternal great grandfather was Andrew Byerly of Bushy Run fame.Her mother is listed in the census records as Mary Jane McKeever and it appears that she married a James McKeever after she was married to Jacob Byerly. The 1860 Westmoreland County census lists her at age 37 and living with James McKeever, age 45. Also listed as living with them is Eliza Jane Byerly, age 14; Elmira Byerly, age 12; Mary M. Byerly, age 7;
Sarah F. Adam, age 2 and Jacob Bergar, age 71. The 1880 Unity Township, Westmoreand County census lists: Mathias Sowash, age 28; Eliza (Jane Byerly) Sowash, age 34; William Sowash, age 8; Charles Sowash, age 4 and Mary Jane McKeever (mother-in-law) age 56. Mathias and Mary Jane Byerly Sowash had three children but only the names of two of these children have been discovered: William Henry and Charles A. Sowash. Mathias Sowash served in Company "K" 158th Pennsylvania Regiment in the Civil War. he died Intestate on January 14, 1916 at 11:40 PM with personal worth valued at $2,000.00. His sons were listed as WH Sowash of Latrobe, PA and Charles A. Sowash of Luxor, PA. Both Mathias and his wife, Eliza Jane Byerly Sowash are buried in the Unity Presbyterian Cemetery in Unity Township, Westmoreland County, PA.
