Clara Mae Shaffer Whitford, died Monday, September 24, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Center, West Union, following a brief illness. She was born July 9, 1914, on a farm west of Elgin, IA, to parents, Ernest and Rose (Baumgartner) Baechler. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1932.
On December 22, 1932, Clara and Howard Shaffer were married. Four children were born to this union. In 1939, the Shaffer's purchased a farm near Wadena, IA, in Illyria Township. In October 1962, Howard passed away and Clara moved to West Union where she worked for Putz Insurance for a time and the Fayette County Treasurer's Office. On June 10, 1967, Clara married Floyd Whitford, who was owner-manager of West Union Auction Exchange, and added Floyd's four children to her family. Floyd died suddenly in 1977.
Clara was an active member of United Methodist Church in West Union and its UMW, and held several offices in WU Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed all of nature, flowers, birds, traveling, reading, quilting, other handcrafts and music. She especially loved following the activities of her children, twenty-two grandchildren and thirty-seven great-grandchildren. Following a stroke in 2005, Clara moved to the Good Samaritan Home in West Union, where she continued to make friends with those around her.
She is survived by children and spouses, Wanda and Don Whitford, Robins, Stan and Sharon Shaffer, Elgin, Denny and Anita Shaffer, Clayton, Jon and Vera Shaffer, Elgin; stepchildren, Jean Olive "Jo" Griffith, Savage, MN, Wendell and Judy Whitford, North Liberty, Clark and Ebby Whitford, West Union, Mary and Russ Wickstrom, Minneapolis, MN; twenty-two beloved grandchildren; thirty-seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Muehlethaler, Stewartville, MN; numerous nieces and nephews.
Clara was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; three brothers, John, Alfred and Melbert and two sisters, Selma Kohls and Mary Jennings.
Memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Church, West Union, West Union Public Library or the Good Samaritan Center, West Union.
