Elizabeth (HAMILTON) DOUGLASS
DIED. At the home of Gilbert DOUGLASS, in McGregor, on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 2 a.m., after a long illness Mrs. Elizabeth DOUGLASS, mother of Mrs. R. NOBLE, and Edmund and George DOUGLASS, of this vicinity. The deceased was a venerable lady for whom all felt a deep regard, and her death demands more than a passing notice. Elizabeth HAMILTON was born in Vermont April 25th, 1787, and at her death was in the 78th year of her age just as old as the Constitution of our Country. She was married in 1806 to Gilbert Douglass, emigrated to New York in 1813, to Illinois in 1824 where her husband died, leaving her the care of several children. In 1845 she removed to this (Clayton) county, where she has since resided. The feebleness of her age added to the pains of disease were borne with a patience and composure that exhibited a consciousness of having done her part well in life and a confidence in a glorious eternity beyond the grave. May He who rules our lives guide us in that path which leads to the blissful future, merited by the worthy mother whose virtues we feebly commemorate
