Unice Odell Whisenhunt McDonald, age 95, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., passed into the presence of her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, September 6, 2021, at Aspire of West Alabama. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul McDonald; parents, John and Earcle May Whisenhunt; brothers, Leon Whisenhunt, Gene Whisenhunt (Nancy), and Charles Whisenhunt; and sister Carnell Garner. She is survived by her daughter, Paulette McDonald Haley and Ann DeFranco (Paul); sister Charlcie Mae Martin; grandchildren Jessie Hood V (Celina) and Brandy Hood; great-grand children Taylor Hood, Jessie Hood VI, and Jessa Hood; and numerous other relatives. Odell—known to most as "Mama D"—was born in Jasper, and was the oldest of six. She was a devoted daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, wife, aunt, seamstress, and follower of Christ. She had a gift for every occasion and she hemmed more pants and altered more prom dresses and bridal gowns than could ever be counted. She was a true rock and a role model, and she had more energy than her grandkids until her final few years. Although she was born before most women entered the workforce, she started working at a young age when she moved to the Birmingham area to make small bags that we think soldiers used in World War 2 to carry ammunition. She married Paul McDonald after the war and they moved around the country several times before ultimately returning to Alabama. Mama D's love for sewing cannot be overstated. She kept her family and friends looking stylish through many decades with beautiful handmade outfits, and she counted Deborah Knit, One Enchanted Evening, and Classy Threads among her favorite jobs. She continued sewing well into her 80s. She also thought fondly of her time in Housekeeping at the University of Alabama. She was an active member of Skyland Baptist Church for many decades. Our family is grateful to the church that meant so much to her over the years and provided a shoulder to lean on in her final years. We are also grateful to the staff at Aspire, who cared so skillfully and compassionately in her final months with us. Funeral services will be held at Memory Chapel Funeral Home at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 11, 2021 with Rev. John Wiggins officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will immediately follow from Memory Hill Gardens.
