Mabel is the last of seven children born to Achilles M. Leabo and Angelic Ashley. Her older siblings are: Rachel Hanna, Lucy, Henry Walter, Josephine, George Albert, and Laura Mildred. Mabel's mother is a full-blooded Flathead Indian who grew up on the Indian Reservation in the Arlee Valley of Montana. Her father's father was of French lineage. The family traveled to Oregon on the Oregon Trail where his mother died. Achilles also spent time in California before he went to Montana. When Mabel was almost a year old, her father died. Four years later her mother married again, to Jeremiah Bartl. Three children were born of this marriage, Mabel's half-siblings: Eleanor, Tolbert, and Rena.
Mabel grew up in Dewey, Montana, Salmon, Idaho, and Gibbonsville, Idaho. In Gibbonsville her mother ran a boardinghouse.
Mabel married William Edward Montague on September 30, 1908 in Grace, Idaho. They became parents to six children: Edward Ackless, Blanche Violet, Elizabeth, Niles William, Norma Beatrice, and Vannice Eleanor. Their children were born in Grace and the family lived there until about 1930 when they moved to Los Angeles, California.
