Clifford Carey, age 70, of Decorah, IA, died on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at Mayo Franciscan Skemp Hospital in LaCrosse, WI.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, January 2, 2021, at the St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Donald Hertges presiding. Burial will be in the spring in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday morning at the church.

Everyone attending will be required to wear a mask and practice social distancing.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the family at: 903 Vernon St., Decorah, IA 52101

Clifford Anthony Carey was born on July 29, 1950, the son of James Robert and Elizabeth Frances (Broghamer) Carey of Ossian.

Clifford was united in marriage to Patricia Marie Green on December 21, 1990, and they had 2 children, Robert John and Joseph Anthony.

Clifford began his law enforcement career as a policeman for the city of Ossian. He graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in Des Moines in 1973 and then proudly served as a Deputy Sheriff for Winneshiek County for 31 years, until his retirement in 2004.

Cliff has always had a love of cars. Growing up, he helped out at his father's service station, Carey's West Side Service, in Ossian. He later worked at Chuck's Standard in Ossian and then at East side Body Shop in Decorah where he also drove a wrecker. Following his retirement from law enforcement he drove school bus for Decorah Community Schools and spent many wintery days plowing snow with his truck.

Clifford loved to fish and treasured his annual fishing trip to Canada with his buddies.

Cliff is co-owner and manager of the Roundhouse Retreat Guesthouse, where he and Pat spend many hours working outside and enjoying the natural peace and beauty of the wooded countryside.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Bob and Betty. Sister: Emmy Lou. Father and mother-in-law: John and Helen Green: Step-mother-in-law: Marcella Green and a brother-in-law: Cliff Tiedt.
