Obituary - Published in the Scranton Times-Tribune, December 26, 2020

Walter C. Avery, 84, formerly of Jermyn, passed away at The Pines Senior Living in Clarks Summit on Friday, Dec. 25. He was the son of the late Charles W. Avery and Mildred Battenberg Avery.

Walter was a graduate of Jermyn High School. He then received a bachelor's degree from the University of Scranton, a teacher's certificate from Kutztown State Teachers College and a master's degree from Bloomsburg.

He taught art for 30 years in the Shamokin Middle School. He also founded a DeMoley chapter while in Shamokin.

He was an active member of Jermyn Lions Club, Aurora Masonic Lodge 523, Jermyn Historical Society and St. James St. George Episcopal Church.

Walter is survived by a sister, Susin Shay and a niece, Kelley Shay of Fairfax, Va.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Battenberg Funeral Home, Jermyn.
