Nellie was born on May 8, 1908 in St. George to Moroni and Emma Jarvis Cottam McArthur. Nellie grew up in St. George, graduated from Dixie College in 1928 and taught school for one year in Virgin, Utah.
On June 12, 1929, she married Emil Gubler in the St. George Temple. He passed away in 1979. Nellie devoted many hours to writing the history of the town of Santa Clara, keeping numerous records and writings of Relief Society, missionary and school histories. Through her life of service and unselfish love, Nellie has touched the lives of many and has received numerous awards for her achievements. Nellie has been a "lively" supporter of Dixie College.
She and her husband, Emil, received an Honorary Associate of Arts Degree in 1974, and she received the Dixie College Lifetime of Service Award in 1998. Nellie was a member of the LDS church and served in every auxiliary of that organization on both the Ward and the Stake level. In later years she enjoyed working at the St. George Temple. Until her recent health decline she enjoyed traveling. She rode a camel while in Israel at the age of 85, and at the age of 92 she rode in a hot air balloon over her beloved "Dixie".
Nellie is survived by 12 children Marion E. (Doris), Phillip D. (Helen) of California, Glen J. (Rachel), and Venice (Delmar) Harris of St. George; Evelyn (Royden) Christian of Salem, UT; Marilyn (Jesse) Bennett of North Logan, UT; Keith A. (Marsha Lyn) of Santa Clara; Earl R. (Judi), Ralph K. (Donna), Marvin W. (Deanne) and Evan R. (Myrta) of Salt Lake; and Kenneth K. (Carol) of Washington State; 68 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren, 26 great-great-grandchildren, brother Eldon McArthur, sister, Annie Jennings, sisters-in-law, Mae McArthur, Pearl McArthur, and Rita McArthur. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Delbert Ward, four grandsons, one granddaughter, one great-grandson, two sisters, five brothers.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday October 8, 2007 at the Santa Clara Valley Chapel, 3040 Santa Clara Dr. at 11 a.m. Visitations will be held on Sunday October 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. St. George Blvd., St. George, (435) 673-4221 and on Monday from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services at the Santa Clara Valley Chapel.
