FAIRBURY — Verda Stahly Maurer, formally of Fairbury and Bloomington, passed away Thursday (Jan. 19, 2017) in Fullerton, Calif.

Respecting her wishes, there will no memorial service. Calvert and Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington, is in charge of her private memorial service.

Verda was born March 25, 1917, to Anna and Ali G. Stahly of Carlock.

She graduated from ISNU (ISU) with a teaching degree in home economics, and she taught both in Springfield and Fairbury.

Verda married Robert Joseph Maurer of Pekin on June 28, 1940, in the North Danvers Mennonite Church where they were members and where they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary by walking down the same aisle that they had walked in 1940.

Survivors of Verda include her daughter, Jo Ellen (Jeff) Sandburg, Palm Coast, Fla.; son, Dr. Rob (Dr. Jody) Maurer, Fullerton, Calif.; granddaughters, Jorie Sandburg (Matt) Orsi, Aurora, Colo.; Anne, Lauren, Erin, and Robyn Maurer, Fullerton, Calif.; and great-granddaughter, Ella Eze Orsi. She has one surviving brother, Ali Stahly Jr., Eureka; and two dear sisters-in-law, Louise (Norval) Stahly, Bloomington, and Lillian (Lory) Stahly, Cape Girardeau, Mo. She has many nieces and nephews with whom she enjoyed visits at home, in the Mennonite Church, at family reunions and celebrations, and at Westminster where she and Bob happily resided due to such wonderful care.

Verda was always appreciative of family who helped her with sudden illness when her children were not close by. She chose to remain near her birthplace until she was 94, when she moved to California to be near Drs. Rob and Jody and her four granddaughters. They have provided much love and care to her these past five years.

Verda was very involved in women’s groups and educational, community, church, social and charitable activities while residing with her family in Fairbury. She began the first kindergarten in the Fairbury/Cropsey school district, led the Junior Department of the United Methodist Church, and was active in leading Cub/Boy Scout troops and Brownie/Girl Scout troops. She was asked to help with several Fairbury wedding receptions due to her culinary and decorating skills.

Verda was a member of the Women’s Club and Shakespeare Club, and she worked tirelessly for the betterment of her community, especially in support of all the activities of her husband, Bob.

One of their honors was being chosen as the 2009 alumni queen and king of ISU’s Homecoming weekend. With red velvet crowns on their heads, they cheered the Redbirds and fans from their parade-day convertible ride, and then were honorees at a private reception in President Bowman’s home. She and Bob were also chosen for the cover of the ISU Alumni 2008 winter issue, which featured ISU grads who had married an ISU grad and were working together to improve their communities.

Verda will be remembered as always a lady, honest, kind to all, and beautiful inside and out. She embodied one of her favorite sayings: “It is better to give than to receive.” She, with Bob at her side, made many lives in their communities and family richer with the gifts that they selflessly gave.

Expressions of sympathy can be made to the North Danvers Mennonite Church, 5517 E. 1950 North Road, Danvers, IL 61732.
