Elizabeth Genevieve Aakre, daughter of Patricia Markert Aakre and Richard B. Aakre, died in Springfield, Massachusetts, on December 2, 2006. She was born in New York City, where she was educated at the Little Red School House and Packer Collegiate Institute, from which she graduated in June 2006. At the time of her death, she was enrolled at Smith College in Northampton, MA, where she had discovered a love for the Latin language. Elizabeth Aakre was known for her artistry in photography and her passion for reading. She loved the works of Philip Pullman, William Faulkner, J.D. Salinger and Iris Murdoch. Although she never competed on an athletic team, she was strong enough to swim up the Delaware River (at Narrowsburg, NY, where she spent the summers with her parents) and was nearly unbeatable in badminton. She is survived by her parents; her grandparents, Theresa and Leonard Markert; her aunts, Ceil Aakre Fillenworth and Eleanor Aakre Newmann, Lyn Markert Hathaway, Cynthia Markert Rust, Mary Markert; and her uncle, Leonard Markert III, along with many cousins and friends. A funeral was held on December 11, 2006, in New York City at the Church of St. Luke in the Fields. Contributions to CBA, 6245 Randall Rd., DeWitt, NY 13214, where we will honor Elizabeth with a permanent display in the Markert Library that will consist of contemporary books and time honored classics.
